It is not uncommon for conferences to be ‘interrupted’ by sponsor presentations. When I say ‘interrupted’, I do not necessarily mean that such talks are unwelcome. Conference days tend to be packed from early morning to late at night, and such sponsor interventions can be quite pleasant – a moment to doze off or to check your e-mail. Robert Sharpe (photo) of Tessella (vendors of the Safety Deposit Box or SDB system) gave us no such respite. In an entertaining presentation he shared some scalability experiences with us…read more

WASHINGTON, D.C. October 6, 2011. On September 20 to 23, 2011, Michael Thuman, Associate Vice President of Digital Archiving at Tessella Inc., served as an expert instructor and content developer for the Library of Congress’ inaugural workshop on teaching digital preservation. The event took place at the Library’s James Madison Building, in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Thuman and five colleagues taught a class of 24 professionals, selected from around the U.S. and representing mainly the library, archival, and museum fields. These students were trained to teach digital preservation to others, in turn, in their home regions of the United States.

Many people mistakenly believe that digital resources will last forever, when in fact they have a shorter lifespan, and are more fragile, than paper-based resources. Examples of materials that commonly need this specialized form of preservation include Web sites; emails; digital photos, music, and videos; and electronic records.

The workshop was sponsored by the Library of Congress’ Digital Preservation Outreach and Education Program (DPOE, www.loc.gov/dpoe), whose mission includes fostering national outreach and education to encourage individuals and organizations to actively preserve their digital content. DPOE is committed to sharing high-quality digital preservation training across the nation, eventually making it available and affordable to virtually any interested organization or individual.

At Tessella, Mr. Thuman is dedicated to working with organizations of all sizes to collaborate on the education, definition, and deployment of digital preservation programs. In previous senior digital archiving roles he has delivered educational symposia, assessed institutional readiness and helped plan deployments ranging in size from gigabytes to petabytes of data. He has participated in the recent “Staying on TRAC” workshop (LYRASIS, 2010), “Digital Preservation Management Course: Implementing Short-Term Strategies for Long-Term Problems” (N McGovern, University of Michigan, 2010 and 2008) and the “Stewardship of Digital Assets” workshop (in 2007 and 2008, the Northeast Document Conservation Center, in conjunction with PALINET, SOLINET, Amigos Library Services, and the OCLC Western Service Center, and with the generous support of the National Endowment for the Humanities, developed a two-day workshop focusing on sustaining digital collections). A committed advocate for the digital preservation discipline, Mr. Thuman has a long-standing IT background in which he has collaborated with institutions on the need for digitization, assisted with development of scanners and document management systems and has worked with emerging technologies to allow organizations to keep pace with the evolving needs of their patrons, students, professors and professionals.

On Thursday 15th September 2011, Tessella held a ceremony at St Catherine’s College, Oxford to officially receive the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation.

The prestigious Innovation Award was made jointly with The National Archives for developing Safety Deposit Box (SDB), a system for preserving digital information over long periods of time, regardless of changes in technology.

Lord Lieutenant Tim Stevenson of Oxfordshire presented the award on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen to Kevin Gell, Managing Director at Tessella and Oliver Morley, Keeper and Chief Executive of The National Archives.

In a speech praising the work of Tessella and The National Archives, Lord Lieutenant Tim Stevenson said: ‘The National Archives’ vision combined with the industry and expertise of Tessella is a unique example of a mutually beneficial collaboration between the public and private sectors. It has helped create a new international market for digital preservation systems led by the Safety Deposit Box system which has now been adopted by archives all over the world’.

The day was enjoyed by Tessella’s clients and staff worldwide and the awards ceremony was followed by demonstrations showcasing the work of Tessella.

The Queen’s Awards are made annually on the Queen’s Birthday and are only given for the highest levels of excellence demonstrated in each category. The National Archives is the only public sector organisation among this year’s winners. In July, Her Majesty The Queen hosted a reception for the winners at Buckingham Palace.

STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory becomes the first user in the scientific research sector to adopt SDB for their archiving solution

Oxford, UK | 22 August 2011. Tessella, the international provider of science powered technology and consulting services is pleased to announce that it has been selected by the Science and Technology Facilities Council to set up a pilot of Tessella’s Safety Deposit Box (SDB) to manage part of their scientific data archive.

David Corney, Head of Data Services at RAL said: “SDB integrates perfectly into our scientific data archive.”

The selection follows a successful pilot project used to evaluate the practicality and effectiveness of SDB for storing part of RAL’s data. Initially, datasets from the ISIS neutron spallation experiments will be collected and ingested in to SDB4, together with the metadata required to facilitate long-term management and preservation. SDB4 supports multiple data “tenants” and it is expected that the pilot will be extended to other users such as the British Atmospheric Data Centre.

SDB has been used for many years to store digital assets in memory institutes, but its use in a scientific environment is new. RAL is at the leading edge of digital archiving of scientific data. SDB will enable RAL to assess the benefits of long-term data preservation to scientific research environments.

Jon Tilbury, Director at Tessella said: “We are extremely pleased that RAL has chosen Tessella’s SDB. The flexibility of SDB’s Digital Preservation Platform has come to the fore proving that it is a mature business solution ready for widespread adoption by academic and commercial organisations, as well as its traditional success with memory institutions. It is also great to work on a project linking Tessella’s scientific heritage with our innovative work in Digital Archiving.”

Tessella will provide RAL with SDB4, the latest version, and will collaborate closely with key individuals from the eScience team and ISIS data administrators.

Tessella’s SDB technology is the leading platform for the preservation of long-term digital records in archives around the world. SDB4 has been designed to help memory institutions (including libraries and archives), who are already skilled at preserving paper material, but face the problems posed by preserving material stored in digital formats.

Pilot users will join the SDB community which includes other archives and libraries such as the UK, Swiss, Malaysian, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, and Austrian State Archives, as well as the Rotterdam Regional Archives, the Wellcome Trust Library and recently Family Search.

Tessella’s Safety Deposit Box (SDB) was developed out of work done in partnership with The National Archives of the UK to help confront the problem of digital preservation. The software, which has already been in use at The National Archives for over six years as the basis of their award-winning Digital Archive system, has been significantly enhanced as part of The National Archives’ Seamless Flow programme.

Tessella has over 30 years of experience supporting scientific research organisations, including RAL, and has a deep appreciation of their long-term data needs. SDB has been constructed to support archiving and preservation of all kinds of scientific and technical data, not simply documents.
