Tessella presented and exhibited at the ‘Doing Business with the World’s Scientific Research Facilities’ which was held at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London on September 16 2008.

Tessella’s work in scientific software – and particularly the fusion technology arena – spans more than 20 years. Tessella’s scientific software specialists have worked on many of the key systems at the Joint European Torus (JET) experiment at UKAEA Culham in the UK, the world’s leading centre for research into fusion power. It is here that teams of scientists from all over Europe have been given the important remit of conducting fusion experiments with a view to generating a plentiful and environmentally safe energy source for the future. Tessella’s presentation explored how professional software engineers and project managers with the right academic backgrounds can contribute to the success of large research projects.

The one day event brought together academia, industry and European and UK-based Large Facility representatives for a combined conference and exhibition.

Train operator Southern, rolling stock leasing company HSBC Rail, and software solutions company Tessella are celebrating after TAPAS (the ‘Train Automatic Performance Analysis System’) has won yet another award at the prestigious National Transport Awards ceremony, at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 15th July 2008.

Groundbreaking technology, TAPAS, has transformed traditional train maintenance by introducing a remote condition-based maintenance system, which can be applied to existing mid-life fleets as well as new rolling stock.

Nick Clarke, technical manager at Tessella said: “I am extremely delighted that TAPAS has won this award. TAPAS has increased the reliability of the Class 455 fleet from 6,000 to 16-17,000 miles per failure, which is excellent news for passengers, at the same time as reducing routine maintenance time.”

Nick Clarke continued: “The changes in the structure of the transport industry have driven companies to modernize and seek new solutions to key challenges such as asset management, condition monitoring, maintenance planning and revenue management. One of Tessella’s defining qualities is to add value to our clients business by taking capabilities and technologies developed in one industry sector and using them to deliver innovative solutions in a completely different sector. Uniting innovation with previous experience, Tessella is perfectly placed to help organizations exploit new technology and so take their performance, and the services they provide, to another level.”

In 2007, Southern, HSBC Rail and Tessella won the Railway Industry Innovation Award in the category of Engineering and Information Technology showing the continued success of TAPAS.

Tessella is delighted to announce a 1.3 million CHF contract award to deliver a Digital Archive solution enabling the long-term preservation and management of the digital records of the Schweizerisches Bundesarchiv (Swiss Federal Archive). The solution will be based on the tried and tested Safety Deposit Box (SDB), developed by Tessella in partnership with The National Archives of the UK (TNA), designed to help memory institutions (including libraries and archives) face the problems posed by preserving material stored in digital formats.

The core software has already been in use at TNA for four years, as the basis of their award-winning ‘Digital Archive’ system, and is currently being significantly enhanced as part of TNA’s Seamless Flow programme. Other users of SDB include the British Library, the National Archives of the Netherlands, and the National Archives of Malaysia.

Dr Robert Sharpe, Tessella’s Head of Digital Archiving Solutions, explained: “We are delighted that the Bundesarchiv has joined the growing SDB community using our advanced archiving solution. We are especially excited about using the Active Preservation technology to add true policy-driven long- term preservation capabilities”.

Jean-Marc Comment, responsible for delivering the project for the Bundesarchiv, said “Tessella’s reputation as technology leaders in Digital Archiving, and the growing acceptance that SDB is the solution of choice to the archiving community, convinced us to select them for this demanding project”.

Kevin Gell, Managing Director of Tessella, concluded: “The challenges of Digital Preservation are considerable and best faced by leading institutions working together. This contract will allow us to continue to build our technology so that the whole SDB user community can benefit. In combination with our work for the US National Archives and Records Administration (through Lockheed Martin), and the PLANETS European Commission funded research programme, we will be able to continue to offer innovative solutions to these complex problems. We are delighted to be supporting the Swiss Federal Archive”.

On Thursday July 24th 2008, Dr Robert Sharpe will be speaking at the 16th International Congress on Archives, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on ‘The Problems of Digital Preservation of Archives’.
