It is not uncommon for conferences to be ‘interrupted’ by sponsor presentations. When I say ‘interrupted’, I do not necessarily mean that such talks are unwelcome. Conference days tend to be packed from early morning to late at night, and such sponsor interventions can be quite pleasant – a moment to doze off or to check your e-mail. Robert Sharpe (photo) of Tessella (vendors of the Safety Deposit Box or SDB system) gave us no such respite. In an entertaining presentation he shared some scalability experiences with us…read more

How cognitive prejudices can influence research decisions, and how the pitfalls of human nature can be avoided

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Merck & Co. was at the height of an epic pharmaceuticals boom. Annual sales doubled and profits tripled, most notably driven by sales of a congestive heart failure treatment that hit the billion-dollar mark just three years after its 1985 introduction. In 1993, Fortune magazine named Merck America’s “most admired” company—for the seventh year in a row. Despite the company’s unparalleled success, Merck was not immune to the common cognitive biases that can subtly influence everyday research decisions…read more

In an age of increasing financial and logistical pressures facing biotech and pharmaceutical companies, optimizing R&D success is a critical task. But in a commentary published last year in Drug Discovery Today, Andrew Chadwick of Tessella and Matthew Segall of Optibrium argued that psychology could be hindering the productivity of drug discovery teams, even suggesting that the traditional approach to discovery is actually blocking progress…read more
