Tessella. Complex problems. Solved.

PRESS RELEASE: The Austrian Bundeskanzleramt (Federal Chancellery) invests 4.58 million Euros for a cross-government digital archiving solution

The Austrian Bundeskanzleramt (Federal Chancellery) addresses the challenges of digital archiving and preservation for the Austrian public sector by using the latest version of Tessella’s Safety Deposit Box (SDB) delivered by Siemens.

Oxford, UK | 9 March 2010. Tessella, the information technology and consulting services company selected by R&D, science and engineering leaders for business-critical assignments is pleased to announce that the Austrian Federal Chancellery has selected Siemens IT Solutions and Services (SISS) and Tessella’s Safety Deposit Box (SDB) to develop the Austrian State e-government Archives.

The Austrian Federal Chancellery is funding the provision of a central platform plus a general license allowing all Austrian public bodies to benefit from the technology for archiving and preservation. The Austrian State Archives will be the first to use this system.

Manfred Fink, Director of Archives for the Republic Vice Director General, Austrian State Archives, said; “Long-term digital preservation is a future-oriented building block for the Austrian State Archives. The project of digital preservation through the possible involvement of other archives of our country has a considerable influence in shaping the future landscape of the Austria archives.”

Siemens chose the latest version of Tessella’s Safety Deposit Box (SDB4) as the perfect solution to manage the ingest process of the Austrian State e-government Archives. SDB4 has been designed to help memory institutions (including libraries and archives), who are already skilled at preserving paper material, but face the problems posed by preserving material stored in digital formats.

Dr Robert Sharpe, Tessella’s Head of Archiving Solutions commented: “I am extremely pleased that Siemens chose Tessella as the best solution for the Austrian Federal Chancellery digital preservation solution. We are delighted to be extending SDB to provide multi-tenant facilities across the many public sector organisations and to be adding the Austrian users to the international SDB community.”

Jon Tilbury, Tessella’s Director responsible for archiving technology, added “We are very pleased to be working with such a professional and prestigious partner as Siemens and look forward to a highly successful project”.

Alexander Leiningen-Westerburg of Siemens was delighted to win this project. “Siemens always picks best of breed solutions and Tessella’s SDB was the perfect choice. We will be looking for other opportunities to work together on complex archiving solutions”.

Tessella’s Safety Deposit Box (SDB) was developed out of work done in partnership with The National Archives of the UK to help confront the problem of digital preservation. The software, which has already been in use at The National Archives for over six years as the basis of their award-winning Digital Archive system, has been significantly enhanced as part of The National Archives’ Seamless Flow programme.

SDB4 builds on the successful SDB3 technology adopted by several major innovators. Enhancements in SDB4 include the open access API and DROOLS workflow allowing customers and third parties to develop their own archiving solutions. These add to the advanced Active Preservation technology incorporating PRONOM and PLANETS tools already deployed.

The Austrian State Archives joins other members of the SDB community such as the UK, Swiss, Malaysian and Dutch National Archives, Rotterdam Regional Archives, the British and Wellcome Trust Libraries and more recently the Estonian National Archives.
