PRESS RELEASE: $20 million US archiving project lead selects Tessella as key team member
Oxford, UK | 28 January 2010. Tessella, the information technology and consulting services company selected by R&D, science and engineering leaders for business-critical assignments announces its inclusion in a project team working on a key US research data preservation project.
The team, called ‘Data Conservancy’ is led by Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Sheridan Libraries, who were awarded a $20 million, 5 year, grant from National Science Foundation (NSF) as part of the DataNet program. The project is part of a $100 million NSF effort to establish a national cyberinfrastructure to support the long term preservation and curation of scientific data.
The scope of the project is for the Data Conservancy team to build a data research infrastructure for the management of the increasing amounts of digital information created for teaching and research, with an emphasis on enabling new scientific discoveries through data integration.
“This project is of great importance,” says Sayeed Choudhury, who is the principal investigator for Data Conservancy and the Hodson Director of the Digital Research and Curation Center and associate dean of university libraries at Johns Hopkins. He continues: “So much information is now ‘born digital’ that efforts like this are vital for enabling new forms of scientific research.”
“This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of an exciting data curation project and to work with likeminded people.” said Mark Evans, Archiving Practice Manager at Tessella.
Tessella staff will lead the Infrastructure Research and Development (IRD) team. The primary responsibility of Tessella staff is to provide oversight and responsibility for delivering all technical aspects of the Data Conservancy system development lifecycle. This includes the development of system architecture, component design, interface definitions, technology and tool selection, physical data models, component development and system integration and deployment. The IRD team lead will work closely with the other team leads, chair of the SDG and Executive Director to ensure that the data curation infrastructure provides a comprehensive set of services and information models that meets the identified needs of the scientists.
Grant Stephen, CEO at Tessella Inc., said, “We are extremely proud that JHU has selected Tessella to be part of this exciting data curation project and look forward to working with a team of renowned experts in this field.”
