Performance Improvement Consultant – Life Sciences
Monday, November 16th, 2009
We are looking for a management consultant with experience in IT-enabled performance improvement for blue chip organizations and government departments, to help grow and deliver our burgeoning consulting business in Europe. Tessella has nearly 30 years of experience supporting the R&D sector in the UK within pharmaceuticals, healthcare, aerospace, defence and energy industries. Increasingly our projects involve business and process change as well as solution specification and delivery, so we are looking for additional experience from a ‘hybrid’ who is comfortable in the user domains of science and engineering. We seek an exceptional individual with potential to progress rapidly, who can both ‘sell’, and deliver to our clients enhanced business performance through improved processes, informatics and information systems.
The Role
We require a consultant with proven operating experience. You will be a self-starter with good client and project management skills, responsible for your own projects and working with other Tessella staff on larger projects.
According to your experience and interests you could be working with top pharma R&D organizations, biotech companies, clinical research groups or suppliers to the healthcare sector. Recent Tessella consulting projects have typically involved IT/IS strategy, enterprise architecture, business needs / requirements analysis, leading workshops, and facilitating decisions by multidisciplinary and international client teams. Downstream activities include workflow design, sourcing and supplier negotiation, and more technical consulting on management decisions (portfolio management and project planning). Increasingly we are seeing interest in (Lean) Six Sigma approaches to improvement, and agile supply chain and manufacturing work, with a focus on process scale-up and process analytical technologies (PAT), and you could have an early opportunity to lead our consulting offer in one or more of these areas.
Within this fast-moving organization, where a high proportion of staff have PhD’s, there is no shortage of ideas and high-tech talent to back up your business acumen. The role will be based in the UK at one of our offices in Abingdon, Stevenage, Burton or Warrington, but you should expect to spend about half your time working on our clients’ premises, often on the Continent of Europe and sometimes in the US or elsewhere. An existing network of senior client contacts will be a strong advantage.
The package will depend very much on your skills and experience. For a candidate with proven consulting experience in life sciences, a salary of up to £70,000 plus benefits could be offered, depending on relevant experience. For a candidate with the right domain expertise, but with more limited experience in consultancy, a salary in the range of £40,000 to £50,000 plus benefits could be expected.
Our Expertise in Supporting R&D clients
Tessella has nearly 30 years heritage of supporting R&D clients. A range of example projects may be found on www.tessella.com/markets-clients.
Typical consulting projects range from £40k – £200k and we are planning for considerable growth in the size of this business over the next three years, as part of Tessella’s ambitious plans for continuing expansion around the core services to science-based industries
Experience
A good grounding in science, preferably with some research experience, is essential. An MBA or other formal training in business, economics, organizational and process improvement would also stand you in good stead
You will have a clear drive to add value to clients’ operations through your well-honed listening and influencing skills and industry insights. You must be confident working with top level management and able to demonstrate quick and well-founded judgments, thinking on your feet, on a wide range of business, people and technology topics. Understanding of drug R&D processes and the scientific and clinical mindsets, and clinical or (bio)chemical process development, would be essential for most likely projects within Tessella. You will bring with you experience in process and performance improvement as a minimum, and must have a strong personal interest in the successful application of IT. Experience in application of statistical principles such as experimental design, or clinical study sizing, and of diagnostics or population genomics/ genetic epidemiology, would be an advantage. Additional skills of consultants in Tessella include risk analysis, decision analysis and in-depth systems analysis and development skills, so if you are not already an IT specialist, this is a good opportunity to learn on the job within a leading IT and technology services group.
Your experience should include delivering a range of consulting projects, at least two under your own project management. Experience of sales support is also strongly desirable as you will need to work with our sales team to help qualify and scope potential projects and close deals. We have a good record of repeat business based on the strengths of our individuals, and would look to you to build our reputation further in your specialist areas of experience.
Other attributes
You’ll be driven, self-motivated and a team player able to work with a talented technical team. You will have an entrepreneurial, innovative perspective. You will be able to communicate complex ideas in simple terms both verbally and in writing in English. Knowledge of additional European language(s) would be an advantage for European working within existing Tessella clients. Experience and understanding of different national and regional working cultures is strongly desirable.
Getting Tessella’s projects off the ground tends to involve complex, multi-site sales with long lead times. We would be looking for your support to this as our business grows, so patience, tenacity and self-confidence will all be helpful.
Education
Numerate degree in a science subject, or equivalent. Doctorate and MBA both desirable.
