Tessella. Complex problems. Solved.

PRESS RELEASE: Tessella wins Wellcome Library digital repository contract

Oxford, UK | March 24 2009. Tessella, the information technology and consulting services company selected by R&D, science and engineering leaders for business-critical assignments, secures Wellcome Library contract.

This contract is for the long-term preservation and management of the Wellcome Library’s born digital records and will use Tessella’s digital archiving and preservation solution Tessella Safety Deposit Box (Tessella SDB™). Jon Tilbury, divisional director at Tesssella, said: “The Wellcome Library is trusted with research records that are of global significance. We are very proud that Wellcome has selected Tessella to deliver the system that will safeguard such precious digital assets.”

Tessella SDB is a professionally developed and supported system that contains functionality to deliver a comprehensive digital archiving solution. It incorporates the proven Active Preservation engine that allows file formats to be refreshed in a sophisticated and controlled manner ensuring long-term access to the digital records. Active Preservation exists now and is in use at several leading institutions. Tessella will deliver, install and support the system allowing the Wellcome Library to concentrate on managing their digital collection rather than developing software.

Tessella SDB was developed in partnership with The National Archives of the UK (TNA). It helps memory institutions (including libraries and archives) overcome the challenges of long term preservation of material stored in digital formats. The core software has already been in use at TNA for four years, as the basis of their award-winning ‘Digital Archive’ system, and it is now running as part of TNA’s Seamless Flow programme. Other users of SDB include The British Library, the Nationaal Archief (Netherlands), the Schweizerisches Bundesarchiv (Switzerland) and the Arkib Negara (Malaysia).

Dr Robert Sharpe, Tessella’s head of digital archiving solutions, explained: “We are delighted that the Wellcome Library has joined the growing list of forwarding looking organizations that have deployed Tessella SDB based solutions. We are especially excited about using the Active Preservation technology with its true policy-driven long- term preservation capabilities”.

Kevin Gell, managing director of Tessella, concluded: “Tessella has a long history of delivering IT solutions to scientific research organizations and producing world leading digital archive technology. Working for the Wellcome Library will bring this experience together, enabling us to deliver a highly effective and fully supported system. In combination with our work with Lockheed Martin for the US National Archives and Records Administration, and the European Commission PLANETS research programme, we continue to strengthen our support for libraries, archives and science based organizations”.
